Take your Yoga to a place of stillness and quiet with the unique practice of Yin Yoga. In this class the focus is on long, slow, deep stretches that target the hips, pelvis, spine and sacrum through floor based poses.
As we age, these are the areas that tend to stiffen, tighten and lose flexibility. The poses are supported, allowing the body and muscles to melt and surrender into them to ultimately nourish the joints and connective tissue. This will improve flexibility on a deep level as well as increase the energy flow through the meridians and enhancing the health of their corresponding organs. A session of Yin Yoga is said to be the equivalent to having an acupuncture treatment.
This wonderful practice encourages you to relax into your poses and to listen to your body’s inner wisdom. The Yin postures will be counterposed with gentle poses to rest the spine and brief core strengtheners. Yang poses such as Downward Facing Dog are included which stimulate the flow of energy in the body before the next pose and maintain a balance of upper body strength – an area where we tend to weaken as we age.
Yin Yoga is a wonderful complement to your regular Yoga practice. Taking the time to be still, doing less postures and holding poses for a longer period of time makes this practice simple and very effective for increasing flexibility. It is appropriate for any level of fitness and also excellent for those active in sports.
